World Port New York: Celebrating 30 Years of the South Street Seaport Museum

A celebration of SSSM’s 30th anniversary, World Port New York had two incarnations, one at the Paine Webber Art Gallery in midtown and one at the museum site in lower Manhattan. Drawing on South Street’s varied collections and on curator Charlie Sachs’s decade of research and collection-building, World Port New York illustrated multiple facets of New York City’s emergence as the world’s greatest port city, ranging from the lives of washerwomen in waterfront hotels to the glamour of the golden age of ocean liners. Debra Schmidt Bach was my co-conspirator in curating. Both the uptown and downtown versions of World Port New York were deftly designed by Linda Weinraub.
